Pastoral Council

Mission

The mission of the Pastoral Council is to serve as the pastor’s major advisory board regarding all aspects of parish life.

Pastoral Council Purpose

To vision the implementation of the current pastoral plan
To adjust the course of the current plan when needed
To vision the next 5 year plan

Pastoral Council Activities to achieve its purpose:

Pray for our faith community
Listen to the experiences of St. James members
Study materials about faith communities
Reflect on how our faith community is currently doing
Discern the Holy Spirit’s direction for our faith community
Make recommendations regarding strategies for implementation of the current pastoral plan

What is asked of each member

A 3 year commitment
Participation in monthly meetings on a Saturday morning
Participation in the council activities listed above
Participation in meetings with other leadership groups, including staff, clergy, and Finance Committee members once or twice per year

Eligibility and Council member qualities

Member of St. James for 2 or more years
Participation in one or more St. James programs or activities
Comfortable with and open to change
Comfortable with looking at the big picture of the community

How do people become members?

People become members of the Pastoral Council through a discernment process.
New members are added each fall. An announcement is made at all the weekend liturgies and in the bulletin inviting people to discern a call to serve. Those who discern a call to serve fill out a discernment card at the front of the church. Invoking the Holy Spirit, new members are selected at each of the six liturgies at the announced weekend date.
